Review: The Layover – New Orleans

I didn’t plan on getting behind on my “The Layover” episodes, but since I did it just happened that I would be writing on the New Orleans episode the day before the Super Bowl!  Tomorrow, well over 100 million people will tune in to watch the Harbaugh brothers battle for the Lombardi trophy, but today Tony takes us into New Orleans food and culture.

The first thing they hit on is how to pronounce New Orleans.  Now, if you are like me and not from Louisiana, then you most likely pronounce “New Orleans” as “New Orleeeens” (extra “e”s added for emphasis).  But the locals insist that this is incorrect.  They pronounce their beloved homeland as “New Orlins”.  This is very similar to when I described how to pronounce Prescott, AZ.

Tony is quick to meet up with his local chef friend and sample the local sea food.  It seems to be a right of passage in NOLA to eat the freshest possible sea food.  Tony and his friend focus specifically on the crab.  This is something that I have been working on myself: liking seafood.  Its not that I hate it, I’ve just never really liked it.  Crab wontons at a Chinese food place are among my favorite appetizers anywhere, but there is little beyond that which I like.  Hopefully as I keep trying new things, my pallet will expand to like more sea food.

The one thing that Tony said you must do while in New Orleans isn’t the food, the French Quarter (pictured to the right), or a even see the beloved football team.  The one thing Tony says you must do is catch the local music scene.  Especially the Rebirth Brass Band!

For breakfast Tony goes to the good ole standby …. Pho!  This vietnamese soup seems to be Tony’s favorite breakfast dish.  I have never had it for breakfast, but it makes one delicious lunch!  If you’ve never had Pho, you are definitely missing out!

The one thing in NOLA that I’d want to try is the Po’ Boy sandwich.  It’s a rather simple sandwich of meat, lettuce, and tomato on a fresh (and toasted) french roll that has been soaked a bit in gravy or broth.  The Po Boy is a staple in NOLA and the local favorite.  Hopefully one day I will get to visit.

    is this what Anthony B’s program that replaces “No Reservations?” ..Thanks:-)

      Great question! This actually started as a secondary show during the second to last season of No Reservations. Apparently the travel channel and bourdain began having lots of disputes and that is the main reason the show came to an end. He is starting a new show on CNN that would “replace” No Reservations called Parts Unknown, in the spring. The word on the street is that they are even bringing over the same crew and everything from No Reservations. The main difference from what I can tell is that the focus is on the even more less traveled areas than No Reservations… the “Unknown” parts.
