Day Dream Fridays – Giant’s Causeway

It has been several weeks since I have done a “Day Dream Fridays” post… this may be because I’ve been so busy lately that I haven’t had much time to day dream! But today this comes to an end… today I day dream again! (I think there might be a song lyric in there)

Todays featured Day Dream Spot: The Giant’s Causeway in Ireland!  Northern Ireland, that is.  We talked very briefly about the conflict in Northern Ireland in a previous post, but the basics is Ireland is its own nation and Northern Ireland is a part of the United Kingdom.  Much of the conflict stems from those who desire Northern Ireland to leave or remain with the United Kingdom.

This is a very unique place.  Easy to identify because of its hexagonal shaped stones, the Causeway is believed to be caused by volcanic activity long ago.  But like most awesome places in the world, there is many important Irish myths surrounding the causeway… usually involving a giant, obviously!  Most myths involve an Irish warrior, running from a giant, and the causeway providing enough obstacle or distraction to allow the warrior to escape!

The causeway is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  This means that they receive protection and money (like the mob!) and are deemed as essential to preserving for all humanity to enjoy!  While that is my paraphrasing, essentially the World Heritage Site label is a fantastic indicator that the place you are visiting is awesome and significant.  There are nearly a thousand sites world wide and the list grows all the time.

Here’s a close up look of the stones:

(You’ve gotta love wikipedia!  If you didn’t know, the majority of the pictures on the site are rights free…  a great resource if you have you’re own blog!)

These shapes are so perplexing to me.  There are other volcanic columns throughout the world, but non quite as recognized as the Giant’s causeway. Today my day dream is to go visit these stones.  Walk around them, take pictures of them… hopefully escape from some giants…

What is your Day Dream Destination today?

Have you been to any of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites?
