Eating Somewhere New – Good Stuff Eatery and We The Pizza

And a couple days ago we talked about The Layover Chicago and a Top Chef Restaurant there.

So I have never watched Top Chef…  Nor could I tell much of anything about Spike Mendelsohn.

But I have had the pleasure on several occasions in time in DC to visit both of Spike Mendelsohn’s restaurants: Good Stuff Eatery and We the Pizza.  These two restaurants do a pretty darn good job of making my two favorite foods, Burgers and Pizza.

Now as you can see, these restaurants are right in the heart of DC… only a couple of blocks from the capitol.  And the fact that my favorite foods are right next to each other is just a bonus!

So here’s the skinny:

Good Stuff Eatery

I am not a person that usually just orders something how it comes and not knowing/caring what is on it, but when I order at Good Stuff, I know it’s going to be some Good Stuff.

My Go To:

The Obama Burger – Applewood Bacon, Onion Marmalade, Roquefort Cheese & Delicious Horseradish Mayo Sauce,

Just to speak to how I order at Good Stuff, the only things I knew were on the Obama Burger before I just looked it up was bacon, some sort of cheese, weird onions, and some sort of sauce… now i’m learning its mayo, and horse radish at that!

Now I am someone who never eats mayo. ever.  Marmalades confuse me because I don’t understand what it is.  And I have never heard of Roquefort cheese before.  But that is the beauty of Good Stuff Eatery.  Although I typically do not like mayo on principle, the many different house mayos available are at a quality of their own.

And for me its kind of like Chinese food.  I never like mayo, and I used to never like Chinese food when I was young.  However, the only encounters I had with Chinese food was Panda Express.  Well, needless to say, Panda Express isn’t exactly the upper echelon of Chinese Cuisine.  But as soon as I tried some better places and some more authentic places…  well I was hooked!  Now I love Chinese food.  And while i’m not ready to declare my love for mayo… Good stuff definitely makes me think twice about it.

Toasted Marshmallow Shake – exactly what it sounds like.

This shake is an experience too interesting to be easily described by words.  One drink and immediately I am brought to fond childhood memories of toasting mallows on an open fire.  I don’t know how they do it, but they do.  I don’t know how they thought it up, but I am glad they did.  The simple fact is that a toasted marshmallow shake is one of those things that I wouldn’t have believed existed and now that I’ve had it, I can’t believe it didn’t

We The Pizza

Now unfortunately I haven’t been enough times to We The Pizza to completely exhaust the selection of pizzas… because they have quite a selection of pies!  I don’t know about you, but I judge any ice cream place on their chocolate, any barbecue place by their brisket (or pulled pork… benefit of the doubt), and any pizza place by their pepperoni.  And we the pizza has a great pepperoni pizza!  I love thin and crispy pizza and the pies here definitely qualify.

Now is it better than probably all the national chains? Sure!  That shouldn’t be too hard for any local pizza joint because you don’t have to sacrifice quality to meet a large demand and a bottom line.  But is it the best I’ve had?  Hard to say…  My favorite in Chicago: Gino’s East…. even if I can’t walk for the rest of the day.  My favorite in New York: pretty much every N.Y. pizza place i’ve been to…. let’s be honest, NY pizza is bomb!  My favorite so far in DC:  We The Pizza… but I’m open for suggestions! Know any good ones?

I won’t pretend to have an exhaustive knowledge of the best local burgers and pizza in DC, but I do think Good Stuff Eatery and We The Pizza have to be in the running.  I am big on marketing, ingredients, atmosphere, and overall theme and design as a big part of my experience at a restaurant.  It is clear, even if you have an opinion of a DC burger or pizza place that is better, that Spike has a clear control and understanding of all of these aspects in his restaurants.  I am stoked every time I hop on the metro and head down from Silver Spring to spend time time at either of these restaurants and enjoy good food!

What are some of your favorite restaurants in your area?

Next week I’ll share with you another one of my other favorite restaurants in the DC area, more specifically in Silver Spring, where I’m at!  And be sure to follow me on Twitter and check us out on facebook!
