Day Dream Fridays: The London Eye

The London Eye is more than just a mere ferris wheel; today, it is something to day dream about.  Situated overlooking the banks of the Thames River in London, this behemoth is well over 443 feet tall!  To give some perspective, the Statue of Liberty is 305 feet tall.  It is the tallest ferris wheel in Europe and, according to wikipedia, it is third in the list of tallest ferris wheels in the world.  Since its opening in march of 2000, the London Eye has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in all of the UK with over 3.5 million visitors annually.

Now, maybe it is just because I loved my high school english class, but whenever I hear of the River Thames, I can’t help but think of the doom and gloom Thames painted by Joseph Conrad at the beginning of Heart of Darkness.  Now I know that London can be rather gloomy, as they receive rain much of the year (not unlike the pacific northwest) but this giant, gleeful ferris wheel really throws a wrench in the somber mood written by Conrad, though many, many years before the wheel.

For me, a trip to the London Eye would do threefold:

1) Give me a “touristy” experience which will undoubtedly be asked about upon returning from your trip.

2) Allow me to see the whole of this part of London from above.

3) Provide a much needed rest and relaxation time, no matter how brief, seeing as most of my trips are at break neck pace!

Sometimes we just need a ferris wheel we can ride to the top of and enjoy the view!  So that’s the DAY DREAM FRIDAY, for today.  Feel free to comment below, and don’t forget to check back for more DAY DREAM DESTINATIONS, every Friday!
